A Little about Ould Newbury
Ould Newbury Golf Club, a nine hole semi-private club in Newbury, Massachusetts, was officially opened for play on Labor Day, September 4, 1916. The basic philosophy of Ould Newbury is to provide an enjoyable golfing and social experience while trying to maintain a dues level that encourages membership in the club. We welcome all golfers and strive to provide activities for all interests.
The club officially opens for play around the second week in April and closes around Thanksgiving. The public is permitted to make tee times on Mondays and Tuesdays, but must play with a member as a guest on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, weekends, and holidays.
Tee times are required for all players. Please call the Pro Shop at 978-465-9888 for tee times.
- Members may make tee times 7 days in advance
- Public may make tee times 2 days in advance.
The public is welcome to enjoy The Pub every day, as long as it is not closed for a private event!

Ron Margeson
General Manager & Head PGA Pro
Ron Margeson joined Ould Newbury in 2006 and fell in love with the course. Since that time, he sailed through the PGA Playing Ability Test, was awarded his PGA teaching professional status, and took on the role of Assistant Golf Professional at Ould Newbury in 2014. In 2015, Ron also became General Manager of Ould Newbury.
Ron is focused on growing the Junior Golf program at Ould Newbury. Under Ron’s direction, the number of junior members has more than tripled over the past few years. In addition, Ron works closely with the Ould Newbury Women’s Assoication.

Jim Hilton
PGA Emeritus
May 1, 1986 feels like yesterday to former Ould Newbury Golf Club Head Professional Jim Hilton. At 25, he became a member of the New England Section of the PGA of America after three years of training, coursework, interviews, and passing the Playing Ability Test—fulfilling a childhood dream he wouldn’t change.
A Newbury native, Hilton grew up at Ould Newbury and graduated from Triton High School in 1979, starring in golf, football, and basketball. He began full-time work in the pro shop under Head Pro Alex Burns and became head pro in 1984.
Early on, he mastered every aspect of the job—long days running the shop, tournaments, lessons, merchandising, and member services. He later emerged as one of the North Shore’s top pros, recording his first hole-in-one in 1987 at Ould Newbury’s 6th, adding two more there. Runner-up for Eastern Massachusetts Player of the Year in 1990, he won the honor in 2002. Hilton holds Ould Newbury’s course record of 64, first set on June 9, 2000, and matched in 2002.

Martin Fitzgerald
Golf Course Supeintendent
Martin Fitzgerald joined the Ould Newbury team in 2025 and brings over 15 years of experience in turf management and golf course maintenance. A lifelong outdoorsman, his passion for the game and the land it’s played on began early—growing up behind a 9-hole course, collecting golf balls, and learning the game from his grandfather.
Over the years, Martin has held leadership roles at Weston Golf Club and Long Meadow Golf Club. He felt an instant connection to Ould Newbury and the membership that already feels like family. He is committed to maintaining the course to the highest standards while completing thoughtful improvement projects that benefit the membership and enhance the overall playing experience.
A dedicated trail runner and ultramarathoner (with a 100-mile race under his belt), it’s not unusual to find him running the course long before the sun comes up.
Martin and his wife Shannon moved to West Newbury in 2021 with their daughters Eryn and Reagan, and dogs Robbie and Duffy. He’s thrilled to bring his expertise to Ould Newbury—and even more excited to now be working in the community he calls home.
